NEW MEDIA WRITING PRIZE

Application Deadline: Friday, November 22nd 2019 

The New Media Writing Prize (NMWP) showcases exciting and inventive stories and poetry that integrate a variety of formats, platforms, and digital media. This international prize is now in its 10th year. The prize encourages and promotes the best in new media writing and is leading the way toward the future of the ‘written’ word and storytelling.

The NMWP has attracted entries from the very best and most innovative writers in the field, from all around the world. For the 2019 competition, there will be four prizes: The if book UK New Media Writing Award, the Unicorn Student Award, the Dot Award, and the Digital Journalism Award. 

Requirements:

Whether you’re a student, a professional, an artist, a writer, a developer, a designer or an enthusiast, the competition is open to all.

It’s also an international competition, open to all outside the UK.

Entries do need to be in English.

Prize:

a. Unicorn Student Award: £750 donated by Unicorn Training – students only!

b. if: book UK New Media Writing Prize: £1000 donated by if: book UK, where the winner may also be a student

c. The Future Journalism Award: £750 offered by Future PLC for innovative and important digital journalism, where the winner may also be a student.

MAGNUM FOUNDATION PHOTOGRAPHY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE PROGRAM

Magnum Foundation’s Photography and Social Justice Program expands diversity and creativity in the field of documentary photography through capacity-building and critical explorations of photography and social change.

Each year, the program supports a diverse, international group of Photography and Social Justice Fellows who are passionate about challenging injustice, pursuing social equality, and advancing human rights through photography. With New York City as a cultural resource, the program provides space for interdisciplinary experimentation, mentored project development, and cross-cultural, critical discourse at the intersection of photography and social justice. During the program, Fellows work on projects with support from Magnum Foundation’s mentors.

Magnum Foundation covers the cost of travel and room and board for the sessions in New York City. Fellows also receive a modest stipend to support the production of their projects. The program is produced in partnership with the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism.

Fellowship Applicant Criteria

Documentary photographers, artists, and photojournalists

Activists who use photography in their change-making practice

Scholars who incorporate images and image-making in their research and scholarship

We encourage applications from self-taught photographers who have not had access to formal training.

Applicants must be proficient in spoken and written English because all instruction will be in English.

THE AFRICAN APP LAUNCHPAD (AAL) INITIATIVE

The African App Launchpad (AAL) initiative is an Africa-wide platform aiming to build the capacity of Youth from Egypt and the other African States and foster establishment of sustainable startups in the area of the advanced ever-changing app and game technologies.

AAL targets building the capacity of ten thousand learners and establishing one hundred startups. AAL works by availing a high-quality, technology-learning online platform through crowd-sourcing top online content developed by prestigious universities and leading companies, and delivered through three leading MOOCs; Coursera, edX, and Udacity.

Eligibility

Citizens of each officially participating African state can apply through the initiative website.

Applicants are accepted as learners subject to fulfilling the following criteria: (Updated on 7th of Aug. 2019)

A higher-education college graduate of the year 2006 at most or will graduate within 2 years (by 2021). Can access all tracks.

Non-ICT applicants and junior university students are eligible for some introductory tracks. If non-ICT applicants are interested in other ICT tracks, a good knowledge of essential ICT technologies is recommended through the following:

Min. 2-years work track in ICT.

Min. 6-month international training record in software technologies.

LEGISLATIVE INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) is implementing a10-week long legislative internship programme with support from the European Union (EU) for young Nigerians who wish to gain knowledge of legislative practices and processes.

Internship Requirements:

Qualification:

(i) At least, a bachelor’s degree in any discipline

(ii) Completed NYSC

(iii) Good writing and speaking skills

(iv) Good computer skills (Microsoft office packages)

(v) Aged between 18 and 35 years.

Location:

Abuja, FCT

Duration of Internship:

September – December 2019

Logistics:

PLAC will support interns with weekly stipends to cover transportation costs within Abuja and lunch for the duration. Other logistics expenses will be borne by the intern. It is advised that prospective interns reside in Abuja or bear the cost of residing in Abuja throughout the internship, as PLAC will not provide accommodation for interns.
